R.I.C 4th Juried Show

I'm honored to be selected at the 4th Juried Show. My piece "Silence" also was awarded a phillip B.Meggs Award for design excellence. Thank you to the jurors Mark Summers, Bill Koeb, Amy Crehore, Phyllis Saroff and Holly & Katie of the R.I.C.

The Pre-opening reception was tonight, it was great time to see my artist friends also good change to meet fabulous artists. The real opening will be tomorrow, first Friday of June, 2011, starting 7pm at Ghost print Gallery. The show runs until June 25th at Ghostprint Gallery.

A illustration of Libby Hill picture for Curt Fritts. He asked me this project for her his wife almost 2 month before. I took longer than I thought, worked on it over night, struggled with color. however, I finished eventually, am satisfied how it turned out. Curt and I surprised Heather on her actually Birthday (30th!) I was very glad it worked out!! Most of all, I was so happy to see that Heather was happy with this picture :) There are Curt and Heather seating on a bench and their little dog spanky facing a scared squirrel. :P

I finally finished 12 illustrations for VCU insider 2011-2012 edition. each picture for each month. from top to bottom; January to December. I did front and back covers first ( check couple below posting), I put good enough time it came out great. I satisfied with them. but for other 12 illustrations, I have only same amount time as I had for covers, besides my photoshop crashed when I had half way done, I had to do all over again. so it doesn't turn out as good as covers. but I enjoyed for doing this illustrations can't wait to see them in print!

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). The place I studied for 3 years and half and got honor to graduate last December. We have been famous as a medical and art school, but since today people will remember my school as the best basketball school. VCU got points 71 :61 over Kansas University which is the number one basketball team so far. People said it was surprising that VCU made in sweet 16, but we passed Elite 8, now we are in final 4! It's Crazy in Richmond with increasing heat of Ram riots. What a great day! I am proud of my school, VCU! It's not done yet, Let's go Rams to Championship!

I work at a communication office of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) as a graphic design intern. Every fall semester, VCU issue a schedule book called insider, which is including all of the school events and information of that year. Since our office graphic designer, Micaela and senior designer, Joy like my illustration, they decided to change a insider cover with my illustration. (It has been a photo cover ever since.. I don't know;) I was so happy to be asked about this project,(I prefer illustrating a picture to design a picture..yea..I am an illustrator.) and those are the complete pictures.

The insider with these pictures will be issued 2011 fall and will be used for an year.
I can't wait!

I did illustration for an article about how developed countries are jealousy of poor countries when they discovery treasures (= wealth) and want to take it from them.

It was a project to make a book out of any material I can find around me.

The rule was I can't buy anything to make this book.

I had a conversation about this with my friend Uni, and she gave me great idea.

She had a solid perfume which has a character name 'Music' on it.

The idea was this.

The character 'Music', visits a black&white village, she exudes a perfume smell

( which will be expressed as music notes on manuscript paper)

The more you riffle the pages of the book,

( which means 'Music' walks into the village more and more)

the village become colorful by 'Music's fragrance.

I came back to America!

By GOD's grace, it was blessing mission trip.
At the same time it was hard in terms of heart issue.
How much I desperate GOD to save those little children?
Do I have a heart of Moses' who asked GOD that delete my name out of the book first before you destroy Israel people? Do I really love GOD and his law?

I have learned, seen many things. Especially I saw myself clearly with GOD's view more than before and still trying to see it even after mission trip. Because coming back from a mission trip is not the end, it is the start to live my life passionately for Christ as a follower of Christ.

It was for my friend Sylvia's Birthday Present.
I didn't have that much time so just put couple of ideas came up my head. Sylvia's Korean name is byuh-ri which mean's star in English so I drew stars. And I was listening Misty Edward 's song Amrs Wide Open , so I used the title as a theme.

Sylvia! open your arms wide before GOD ! and remember his promise as seeing countless stars in the sky!! :)

Hangul is Korean Alphabet, the most scientific language in the world.
The Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon, 집현전) is often credited for the work, it was promulgated by the fourth king of the Joseon Dynasty, Sejong the Great

Hangul consists of 14 consonants and 10 vowels.

My 2nd favorite pen. Pentel GFKP brush pen.
While the Hi-Tec which is I always use, my 1st favorite, gives me very thin & clear line so I am available to draw in detail, Pentel brush pen gives me big bold line, it allows to me to catch moments in short amount of time.
So, Hi-tec and Pentel have pretty much opposite chracter, but I love to use both because it covers each others' weakness with their own strength. Like GOD gives people different characters and we all help each other. :)

Starbucks 2009

In the middle of February this year, I got notice that my 'Starbucks' piece got into Society of Illustrator(SI) 2010 Student Scholarship Exhibition. Today(May 7th) is the Opening day for the show, but I am here, at MCV hospital Emergency room in Richmond with my roommate. She has been had stomachache and tooth pain, and has thrown up several times since last night.
It's my third time I couldn't go to the SI exhibition this year. first time I was in Korea, second time it was very awful snowstorm all over east cost, I lost my transportation (also safety issue). This time, I missed my bus and my roommate is sick. (My roommate and I went bus station in the morning, but the direction I got was wrong, far from bus station, we went private land, faced to dead end sign.
I surrendered GOD again saying wow.. Ok GOD, if you want to stop me you can definitely stop me. I am sorry I put my will before your will. I accepted it and I thank you.
What I am saying is that GOD wants me to focus him only not on this secular world. Specially now I am training to go mission trip in this summer, I need to only focus him more than any other time in my life. however I rationalized my thought that I am going there not for my good for his good, I need to meet art directors to get a job, so I can do GOD's work. So I pestered him to let me go saying I won't loose my focus on you. But as a result, God stoped me, and I am glad he did. I wasn't 100% sure he said I can go also felt uncomfortable little bit. GOD is good. he makes all together for my good. I thank that I got wrong direction so I missed bus. if I didn't, I wasn't able to sit here, emergency room next by my roommate Nina, who is going through several complicated exams, and complaining of pain in her abdomen every 30 minutes.
Please pray for Nina, her physical body pain also her spirit. and pray for the people who will see my piece at the SI exhibition in New York tonight. I drew little cross again like I did on my Kitchen piece.finally please pray for our mission trip, I will post the detail about the mission soon.

My new drawings from my classes, trip, bible study and fellowship.
Since I loved to draw architecture, people were always secondary subject for me.(Also I messed up every time I draw people, so I avoided more.) but I realized this is why I need to draw people, I have been tried to draw people from life since last winter, and this time I focused on only people. I messed up most of times at first, ruined my sketchbook pages a lot. But more I ruin it, more I develop, now I love to draw people!

Hope you enjoy appreciating these drawings as much as I enjoyed drawing them :)

I did poster for play called "butterflies are free". The play is written by Leonard Gershe, it is also filmed in 1972 by director Milton Katselas, in 1986, a musical was also made.

Synopsis :
The story is set in the San Francisco of 1970's. All Don Baker wants is a place of his own away from his over-protective mother. Don's been blind since birth, but that doesn't stop him from setting up in an apartment and making the acquaintance of his off-the-wall, liberated, actress neighbor Jill. Jill has never met a blind man before, so she asks all sorts of question about how Don manages everyday chores. Don starts to fall in love with Jill, but Jill is moving in with Ralph who is director of a play in which she'll be acting...

I don't know why but thought the background of the story was New York. So I drew high buildings image including empire state building. Oooops! It was my mistake, I have to fix it.. yes, to study and accustom to the story is basic but crucial before making a picture!

Virginia Asian Chamber of Commerce Business China meeting.

I got phone call from Ms. Mylan Tran who is a senior coordinator of Virginia Asian Chamber of Commerce(VACC). She was impressed by my exhibition, asked me to paint for VACC gala show on December in Jefferson Hotel. Also she invited me to its business china forum, I met lots of business people including Jim Cheng who is Virginia Secretary of Trade and Commerce. I did quick life drawing during the forum, which I've been tried and will try to focus on since I want to catch a moment as a journal of daily events. It was definitely unexpected phone call, I thank you Lord to show me another opportunity.

Sungkyung Park was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea and during high school she found her love of art in the clay animation club. Afterward, she attended college in South Korea and pursued a major in advertisement. She then decided to switch gears and pursue her artistic talent in America. Currently she is a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Communication Arts Department.

She mainly focuses on life drawing, capturing the overlooked beauty of her everyday surroundings. As a foreigner, especially she found the American scene unconventional yet inspiring. The architecture of Richmond was what drew her and she sank into drawing whatever she saw around her. Her line is fluid and direct in capturing her subjects. Her color is subtle, soft, and accents the delicate contour shapes of each page.

She had a group exhibition in The Anderson Gallery in the spring of 2008, and Art6 gallery in the summer of 2009. She has received a scholarship from the Communication Arts Department and an award from The Society of Illustrators for her fascinating drawings. These days she spends most of her time in the Honors Studio and with an internship in Communication Design Inc.

Maybe, there are some people who expect very novel drawings about Korea (ex: traditional architecture, street view etc..) but I am sorry to say that it didn't happened this time.
I went Korea during this winter break for short. It was very, very cold. Freezing. The forecast said it was the most coldest winter in 100 years. Once I tried to draw outside, my hands got frozen. so most drawings were drawn inside such as my home, Buses, subways etc.. which are always warm. Next time, when I go Korea, I will draw Real, traditional Korea :P

Society of Illustrator 52

I applied some of my works for the illustrators 52 competition held by Society of illustrators and my piece 'Kitchen 1'has been selected in uncommissioned category. I didn't expect at all, it is such a blessing, truly my honor. I really appreciate all of you who always support my work :)

The 'Kitchen 1' will hang in the Society of Illustrators' gallery in New york. The exhibition will be January 6th through 23th 2010, the opening reception will be January 8th Friday 6pm.

The below is the explanation of this piece which will be included in the book illustrators 52.

This is a page from my sketchbook. It is also the first drawing that I have been satisfied with after doing sketchbooking. Since drawing has soaked into my life, I carry my sketchbook everywhere I go and draw life as it is. When I did this piece, I woke up in the morning, walked straight to the kitchen, grabbed a pen and drew. I didn't try to make it look great by adding or deleting pen strokes. I just drew what I saw as it was. By dong so, it gave me so much freedom and joy. Most of all, the result of this piece is living. Yes, honesty is better than cleverness.

I took three art classes this semester. I used different medium for each class; watercolor, oil and acrylic. It was my first time to handle water color seriously and first time to paint with oil. Besides I have started to accept commission works. I had been very busy but as much as being busy, I learn a lot. Not just how to paint, but also how to think before painting which is more important than actually painting.

Art supply vest

I got an assignment to make an art supply vest for my Concept Drawing class. Since I am not a fashion major, It was unexpected assignment. I even wasn't sure how I could start, but Thank you Lord, I met my friend Amanda who graduated VCU fashion department this may. I got lots of helps from her not only to make a vest but also to go through this semester (It was perfect time to meet her). We spent over 60$ for materials, and full weekend for 3 weekss (day and night) in order to finish this vest. It was very different when it came to actual making after designing. I was unfamiliar with sawing, there were a lot of trials and errors. However I gain lots of things through this experience especially great fellowship :)

This vest can carry a laptop (15 inch, Macbook Pro), a tablet (4X3, Wacom), an iPod (Classic), a Phone, a headphones, pens, brushes, tissues and a sketchbook (4X3)

I usually like to draw architectures and environments.
It's easy to think that strict lines are needed for architecture drawings, and flexible lines are needed for figure drawings. But it is not quiet true for me. My flexible lines make my architectures creative, on the other hand my figure drawings need more rigid lines. Since I got used to draw flexible lines too much, my figures lose their form. I need more practice my figures with clear and rigid lines.

My clay work
they are my favorite dolls!

Meaning
: it literally means dirty water in Korean

Origin
: when I was in high school, I was part of clay-animation team.
I was one of the main clay doll creators. we made a lot of clay dolls and backgrounds out of clay, but there were always little pieces of clay left over. we thought it was a waste to through them out all the time, so we started to mix them and it turned out as dirty colored clay, it looked like mud in dirty water. We created this clay doll and named it Koojung-mool.

: he is shy, very quiet and blushes easily.
sometimes he is out of it without any reasons.
he is clumsy and silly.
but he is absolutely lovely.
